Lake Wawasee Runs on Autopilot: What This Spring's Flood Actually Proved

By the first week of April, John Heckaman had crews working against water instead of with it. Heckaman runs Sudlow Pier Shop, and he told InkFreeNews his teams were about a week and a half behind schedule, trying to set piers into a lake that kept rising under them. A few miles over, Kerry Rookstool of Rookstool Pier was pulling sections back out of the water because, in his words to the same paper, they were floating away before the posts could set. Andy Wysong, general manager at Wawasee Boat Company, put it plainly to residents asking when their boats would be ready.

"This is the year when boaters need patience."

Most people who watched the water climb over the spillway at the Syracuse Water Control Device that week assumed somebody, somewhere, made a call that let it happen. Nobody did. That's the part of this spring's story that didn't make it into most of the coverage, and it's the reason Wawasee came out of the wettest stretch in years in noticeably better shape than the lakes just to its north.

The Spillway Doesn't Take a Vote

Syracuse's water control device isn't a dam in the way most people picture one. It has no gates for an operator to open or close, and per InkFreeNews' April explainer on the region's water structures, it has no formal flood stage at all. It runs on a weir, a fixed spillway that simply lets water spill into Turkey Creek automatically once the lake rises past its legal level of 858.87 feet. Nobody decides when that happens. Physics decides.

Compare that to what's happening upstream at North Webster, where the Tippecanoe River is managed by an actual dam with gates. According to Webster Lake Conservation Association President Michael Wyrick, that structure isn't built for flood control either, but for holding a legal water level, which means an operator has to judge, in real time, how much to release and when. Wyrick told InkFreeNews the dam has about 21 inches of storage capacity to work with between normal pool and flood stage, and if the gates stay shut too long in heavy rain, the water can overtop the land dam itself.

That difference is why Heckaman told InkFreeNews the Wawasee and Syracuse Lake installations came through better than the ones on the Webster, Barbee, and Tippecanoe chains. The lakes with human-operated gates absorbed more risk during a week when every decision had a downstream consequence. Wawasee's spillway just did what it always does.

Piers, Behind by a Week and a Half

None of that made the spring painless. On the afternoon of April 3, the Syracuse control device was running about four inches above the legal limit, with water pouring over the weir. By April 7, that number had climbed to roughly seven inches above legal, according to InkFreeNews, and the Indiana DNR issued an idle-speed restriction on the Tippecanoe Lake Chain that afternoon, covering Wawasee along with Tippecanoe, Oswego, and James lakes. At Willow Grove on Wawasee, Heckaman noted a garage and the surrounding area went under.

For anyone with a lift or a pier contract, the practical effect was simple. Heckaman estimated his crews were running about a week and a half behind on installs, and Rookstool called the whole season a wild card if more rain came. Delivery barges had to move carefully to avoid wake damage on their own deliveries, which slowed everything further. None of this was a failure of planning. It was a lake doing exactly what an unmanaged spillway does when the sky won't cooperate.

The Dashboard That Didn't Exist Last Spring

What's different this year is that residents didn't have to rely on secondhand reports to know where things stood. On April 14, the Turkey Creek Dam and Dike Conservancy District, working with the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation and the Ecosystems Connections Institute, launched a free live dashboard tracking the watershed around the clock. It's the same category of stream-gauge data the U.S. Geological Survey collects on major rivers, scaled down to Wawasee's own creeks.

The dashboard tracks:

  • Inflow from Greater Dillon Creek and Martin Creek
  • Papakeechie inflow into the lake system
  • Turkey Creek inflow before it reaches the lake
  • Turkey Creek outflow below the Syracuse Water Control Device itself
  • Local air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and barometric pressure

For a pier owner trying to decide whether to call a contractor now or wait two weeks, that's the difference between guessing and knowing.

Three Cameras, and Now You Can Just Look

The district didn't stop at numbers. On May 30, three new cameras went live at the water control device, installed with help from Al Tehan and his crew at Technology Services. One faces downstream, one shows the front of the structure, and one looks toward town hall. Anyone can pull them up through the conservancy district's site and see the spillway in real time, the same structure that spent early April running four to seven inches over its legal mark.

It's a small addition with a specific purpose. Board members had noted earlier in the year that spring releases and summer dry spells are easier to explain when people can watch the water move instead of hearing about it after the fact.

The Driest May in 16 Years, Right After the Wettest Winter in Decades

Here's where the whiplash gets interesting. According to federal drought tracking, Kosciusko County's May 2026 came in as the 16th driest May on record over a 132-year period, running 1.79 inches below normal. That's a sharp turn from what preceded it. The same county data shows January through May 2026 ranked as the 31st wettest start to a year over that same 132-year stretch, running 2.39 inches above normal.

Put those two numbers side by side and a useful lesson falls out. The spring that felt like the wettest anyone could remember didn't even crack the top 30 on the long record. The dry snap that followed it, though, was genuinely rare. If you owned a pier that went in late in April, the instinct might be to brace for a soggy summer. The record says the opposite is just as likely, and this year it happened within about six weeks.

By the time the 12th annual Wawasee Fine Arts Festival opened at Oakwood Resort on May 23, presented by Chautauqua-Wawasee, the same watershed that had spilled over its banks in early April was already sliding toward that historically dry month. The lake doesn't hold a grudge, and it doesn't hold a memory either.

What Showed Up on the Water Once It Settled

By July, the water had done what it does every year regardless of how it got there, and the lake put on its biggest show yet. For Wawasee250, marking America's semiquincentennial, the Wawasee Property Owners Association fielded twelve brand-new barges built right in Syracuse alongside six from the existing fleet, eighteen barges total firing from seven positions instead of the usual three. Zambelli, the pyrotechnic company behind Thunder Over Louisville, ran the show, and the WPOA broadcast it live over Willie 103.5 FM so every dock and porch around the lake heard it together. The 65th Wawasee Flotilla paraded the same water that had been under DNR restriction three months earlier.

None of that would have been news if the spring flood had been the whole story. It's the fact that a lake governed by a spillway with no committee behind it can go from an idle-speed restriction in April to its largest fireworks display ever in July that makes the mechanics worth understanding in the first place.

When the rain starts piling up, you don't need to wonder whether someone upstream is making the right call about your water level. Nobody is making a call at all.
